NYE! Review: Tartine Bakery & Pizzeria Delfina

Posted in Holiday, Review at 8:54 pm by jeannesays

The last day of the year started off with a bang as I ran around frantically after I overslept to meet Lupe & CNQ. I picked Lupe up…only 20 minutes late. I made her stop at the post office with me and then we headed off for San Francisco to the Mission District and Tartine Bakery!
We tried so many yummy things (both before lunch and later that afternoon with Heido):
croissant – excellent, A+!
lemon curd tart – a little too liquidy with a great crust, B+
gougere – huge and good even cold
oatmeal chocolate chip cookie – this was very thin & crisp, not to my taste since I prefer chewy cookies but we all marveled at the hugeness of it. This was as big as my face. And I have a BIG HEAD. B+
shortbread – so so so buttery, B
lemon meringue cake – multitude of thin layers enrobed with lemon curd and entirely covered with whirls of meringue that were torched lightly to a gorgeous golden brown – A

After some of the sweet things, we turned the corner and had lunch at Pizzeria Delfina. We got three seats at the counter with just a short wait and ate some very delicious pizza.
Amatriciana – guanciale, caramelized onions, red peppers, garlic, & tomatoes
Prosciutto – prosciutto, bufalo mozzarella, & lightly dressed fresh arugula

We had to walk off the food so we wandered down to Dolores Park.

Lupe & CNQ decided they had to ride on the swings…I decided I had to take pictures.

Lupe & I made a stop with some of the Tartine deliciousness to see Heido and baby Jimbo again. I looooooove him. He is such a sweet baby. I can’t believe she has a baby! He is getting chubbier and his eyelashes are long and dark when he’s sleeping and he snuggles up to your neck when you hold him and I am just going on and on and on about how wonderful he is…pictures on other memory card, darn it!

Anyway! I took Lupe home so she could finish packing. She left for Portland at 5am this morning. After a quick dinner with my parents I went over to Garrpaccio & Frackaccino’s place for a very low key NYE with our other high school friends. We played games and watched a little HIMYM…and completely missed the countdown. Go us!
Overall Impressions:
Tartine
food: 4 I feel like this bakery is a little pricey, but there’s always a line out the door. Everything we tried was flaky, buttery, and quite delicious. The open faced croque monsieur and pressed sandwiches smelled and looked amazing. They also have a coffee bar.
ambiance: 4 There are a few tables inside the bakery. The space is saved from stuffiness by high ceilings and huge windows. There are also several outside tables, that enhance a faux Parisian environment.
why I’d go back: I didn’t try any of the amazing looking/smelling sandwiches! Also, I hear the morning buns are fabulous.

Pizzeria Delfina:
food: 4 The pizzas are always perfectly scorched with a thin chewy crust that isn’t too cracker thin. The toppings are great and I always like trying one of the changing special pies.
ambiance: 3+ It’s a small space. That’s one thing I hate about most restaurants in the city – very small and noisy.
why I’d go back: It’s yummy pizza and it’s located on a block where in one direction you can go to the Bi-Rite Creamery for ice cream, and in the other you get delicious baked yumminess. Wonderful combination.

Merry Christmas!

I celebrated by sleeping in.
As expected, nothing was open in the area besides Asian restaurants, so when Kristychoo & Graque wanted to meet up, we ended up going to a dessert cafe in San Mateo: Golden Island. Then they gave us the check before we were really ready to go, so we went to the other dessert cafe in San Mateo: Dessert Republic. I liked my spam & egg sandwich a lot!
Unpacking update: all the boxes I shipped home have been opened! I recycled all the boxes. Of course, now everything that was in the boxes is now sitting on the floor in piles, but soon it will go to my storage unit and into the closet, etc. I’d say I’m at 50%.
Today’s been very chill, and it almost feels like Thanksgiving because I’ve been mentally thanking God for a lot of things in my life. Then I capped it off by bickering with my mom about whether I just haven’t “learned” to eat green onions or if I’m finally old enough to just NOT LIKE something. I don’t like green onions. I don’t think that takes away my grown up status. I’m curious, and also, I want comments, so what are things you really don’t like to eat?
Jeanne: salad dressing, avocado, green onion, cilantro, parsley (garnish in general), raw onion, soup

Thanksgiving!

Wednesday night Fisher, Em, & I went to dinner at Applebee’s (it’s cheap and it’s close) and then to watch Quantum of Solace. I really liked it. I think Daniel Craig is a good Bond, and he looks great in all those sharp suits they stick him in. I didn’t think the Bond girl was pretty based on the cardboard cutout in the lobby (it made her nose look twice as big!) but she’s so gorgeous in the movie. I don’t really understand why they had a Russian actress play a Bolivian girl but she was good, so that worked out.
We headed to Campbell’s house for Thanksgiving dinner on Thursday afternoon. His parents made two fabulous turkeys (one barbecued and one roasted) and there was so much good food. We had the famous “Soup Family Sour Beans” which are green beans slow cooked with vinegar and bacon. MMM. After dinner we continued Fisher’s Bond education and watched Dr. No. Em & I catnapped (okay fine, I’m just narcoleptic) in preparation for our midnight expedition.
We decided to go to the midnight outlet mall sales because we heard about some potentially great deals. Now on the other side of the day I don’t know if I would go back, because it was insane. But I don’t have buyer’s remorse, so there’s that. There were a lot of lines and the crowds were huge. We got home at 4:30. The last time I stayed out that late it was after QK’s wedding. The Seattle Premium Outlets are really nice, and there are some really good name stores there. I’d go back! (well, I would, if I had any money left.)
