Review: Zippy’s Hair Studio
I wanted to get another digital perm but didn’t feel the need to squeeze it in at Ten Pachi before I left Washington. I did get a trim there that prolonged my hair style for several weeks so that was nice. I googled digital perms in the South Bay but after reading reviews on Yelp (I have a love-hate relationship with Yelp) I ultimately felt more comfortable making an appointment at an SF salon. Zippy’s is Japanese owned and operated, and the bonus for me was that even though haircuts there are more expensive than Ten Pachi ($55) the perm was only $170, including cut. I paid…$195 at Ten Pachi and then when I went back for the “styling” appointment a couple of weeks later, another $20 for a cut. (Please, no comments on how ridiculous the money I spend on my hair is. It’s my choice. I’m sure you buy stuff…::cough cameras 4 star meals out having children weddings end cough:: that I’m not spending on right now. =) Another big plus, no product pushing! I really liked my stylist, Etsuko. She gave me a nice head, neck, and shoulder massage and styled my hair really nicely before I left. You can’t wash your hair for 48 hours after getting a perm, so I was prepared for the horrible “french poodle” effect, but my hair looks better than normal right now.
This time the process took about 3.75 hours. I knew what to expect though! I had cleared the afternoon and brought 2 books with me. All of their magazines, etc. are in Japanese. Also, they only take cash or check. I was a little frustrated by parking, but I think it’ll be key to book appointments in the mid or late afternoon. Residential parking there is free on the side streets with a 2 hour limit from 9-4. I got there around 2:30 so I could leave my car there for the duration without fear of ticketing. It was nice to explore an SF neighborhood I had never been to before. It was also a little hard to find Zippy’s because their sign is so darned tiny, and because I had their old address in Emily. Thankfully, the new place was only a few doors down. It is a converted house that’s very open and airy with the styling stations spaced out between the rooms.
I would definitely go back for the perms there. Excuse my bad self-photo taking skills. I was seekretly snapping pictures in the bathroom again.

Sibline!
In optometry school we have a big sib-little sib line that has been going on at least since 1997. One of our professors updates the excel file every year and sends it out. My big sib Jellybn is someone I’ve known since undergrad. She’s wonderful, especially in terms of providing support, a listening ear, and good advice. I hoped that I’d be able to build the same kind of relationship with my little sib. Once I met EF I knew it was going to be great. She is incredibly sweet and fun to spend time with. One of my few regrets about optometry school is that we haven’t hung out that much! The rest of my line is lovely too. I got to meet my great grandsib (now known as baby sib) at a dinner my little sib hosted. Of course, my grandsib was there too! We had a great time eating EF’s delicious homemade dinner (down to the crockpot brownie dessert!) and bonding. I hope we have another fun sib hangout before I leave. Whoever joins my line will be in good hands with these three big sibs to look after her/him.

Jellybn hosted a party with her boyfriend in SF while she was back from NYC for the holidays. It’s always great to see her!
I insisted on a picture with my lovely line. Aren’t they gorgeous? (And yeah, again, my head is the biggest. I don’t know why I have such a melon head)

L to R: Me (the old lady!), EF (my little sib), AO (grandsib), AW (baby sib).

Shoe Dilemma Update!
I returned both shoes. I spent a few nights wearing the Seychelles around the house and as much as I loved them…they were too impractical. I went shopping on Monday with only this mission in mind. After trawling through the Great Mall with zero success, I stopped at DSW and found a pair of black satin peeptoe pumps with some pleating and rhinestones. They were really comfortable and the heel is completely manageable. I bought them, and then packed up the other shoes for return.
I kept thinking about the silly little fabric rose though, and finally turned to ebay. I found black grosgrain rosette shoe clips just like the ones on the Seychelles shoes and they arrived today! (Very fast shipping).

What do you think? Oh, and all in all it was a little less than half of what I paid for that other pair. =)

Half Moon Bay
Wenza Bronica, Garrpaccio, & I spent an afternoon in Half Moon Bay last week. Before undertaking the treacherous (ok, mildly winding) road there, we stopped for a late brunch at A Good Morning in Los Altos. We had meant to try another place, but it was closed…so was the second one we tried, and then we ended up at A Good Morning because it was next to the second place and most importantly, open.
I had a Popeye omelet with spinach, mushrooms, and provolone. The vegetables were cooked well but I don’t think they cleaned the mushrooms very well. I realized there was muddy grit pooling on my plate after I had eaten almost the whole thing and felt a little gross. Since they were serving breakfast and lunch I decided to get fries instead of hash browns or country potatoes. The fries were straight out of the freezer and undersalted.

Garrpaccio had the chicken apple sausage breakfast. He seemed pleased. The bite of sausage I stole was tasty.

WB ordered the “First Class” grilled cheese but added bacon to make it a “First Class Wen” sandwich.

They have a machine to squeeze fresh orange juice right in the middle of the restaurant. They also had a lot of doughnuts and pastries but we stuck to regular food.
Overall impressions?
food: 4 Simple good dineresque dishes
ambience: 4 It’s a clean little coffee shop/restaurant/bakery with lots of windows and a good bathroom.
why I’d go back? I don’t know if I would since there are so many other places around there I haven’t been to, but if it was suggested I wouldn’t veto.
Half Moon Bay was gorgeous!

We ran into a lot of traffic on the way back so we stopped at a little seafood place that WB found on Yelp. It was definitely good timing on our part because we got the last free table before a waiting list got started. Their specialty is something called crabby cheezy bread and so we got an order of that to start.

Unfortunately it only lived up to its name because I got crabby after trying it. There’s crab on top, but not much, and you can’t really taste it. You can’t taste the cheese either. It’s just like a piece of garlic bread. And since it’s $8 an order, it’s expensive garlic bread. Wenza & I also ordered clam chowder. WB liked it, but I prefer a thicker chowder. I think this one was made with milk and a lot of clam juice. GP thought it was good with the addition of a LOT of hot sauce.

WB also got a fish taco that I have no good pictures of, but it looked like (and was reported to be) a good fish taco. This same fish appeared in G’s fish & chips, but in GIANT FORM. He ordered two pieces, but together they would cover a regular dinner plate. A tiny old lady at another table ordered a 3 piece plate, which was a veritable mountain of fish. We saw her shock when it arrived, but she gamely stepped up and worked away at it. The fish was fresh and the batter was pretty good.

I ordered a salmon wrapp (yep, with two “p”s!) that was quite tasty. The fish was moist and the rice, cabbage, and pineapple salsa all worked together nicely.

Overall impressions?
food: 3 The fish & chips was truly impressive. The crabby cheezy bread was overrated.
ambience: 4 The restaurant is really colorful but it’s small so you should be prepared to wait or get there early.
why I’d go back? I wouldn’t. Fish & chips are good at plenty of other restaurants, and nothing else stood out to me.

Shoe Dilemma
LB asked us to wear black shoes for the wedding. I think she meant to save us money since we all most likely had nice black shoes. I…took it to mean “buy some new black shoes!” First I wanted to find the black version of these light blue peeptoe pumps I have that I got over the summer…but thanks to Nine West’s annoying policy of renaming shoes that go to their outlet store, I can’t find them anywhere in the stores or online. They are the most comfortable dress shoes I’ve ever worn. When I gave up that idea, then I just started clicking around. I knew I wanted another peeptoe pump, and I became hooked on shoes with ribbon roses. I don’t know why, I just really really wanted a pair of pumps with flowers.
I saw these shoes in late December but the price tag ($94) held me back. It’s definitely a lot more than I usually pay for shoes (I AM THE BARGAIN QUEEN!) and the regular price is a bit of a stretch. However, when I poked around online, they weren’t being sold at many sites or major stores. Also, whenever I visited them at Zappos the stock seemed to be dwindling very fast. So I bit the bullet and ordered them. I really love them, but they are awfully high. Now, I’ve still periodically been checking other sites and google to see if they go on sale, but everywhere that had them seemed to be out of stock in my size and color, and the price hasn’t gone down.
During my search I found a pair of black peeptoe pumps from Ann Taylor Loft that seemed to fit a lot of my criteria and were much cheaper. I had a coupon, so I think I only paid about $25 for them. Unfortunately when I tried them on the difference in quality was very clear. They aren’t terrible, but the soles of the Seychelles shoes are much more padded and the fabric of the shoe seems better too. Also, despite ATL’s claim that the heel is 2.5″ and Seychelles says the shoes have a 3.25″ heel, the heels are very similar in height. The Seychelles shoes have a wider, more stable heel. Also, the peeptoe opening is more comfortable.
Looking back on the last paragraph, the first pair really jumps out as the forerunner. But is it $75 better than the ATL pair? Or should I dig out some of my other black dress shoes?
None of my other shoes are jumping out at me as being extremely comfortable and great for an all day on your feet extravaganza, so I’m not really concerned about the heel height since I figure I’ll keep a pair of flip flops in my purse for off time use.

Vision Screenings
Today was my first vision screening day. The kids are SO CUTE. I had to get up when it was wayyyy too dark & cold (5:30) because I wasn’t sure how 680 traffic would be, so that part was terrible. We finished at 11:30 though, so it balances out.
I was busily working my way down the line doing near cover tests when I noticed a new scent in the library…Consuela had warned me about how much the little boys love farts, but I’d forgotten until that moment. Of course, no one denied or claimed it. Instead, the entire line collapsed into giggles. If it weren’t for the pungent aroma, I’d find their reaction super cute indeed.
SC & I spent a few minutes oohing and aahing over one little second grader’s beauuuuutiful eyes. Centimeter long lashes, pale grey-brown color…and he says they turn blue or green too. I know it’s not cool to call boys “pretty”, but this kid’s eyes definitely qualified.

It’s a Small Small World…
I went to Ryowa Ramen last night with Zombie Hunter, Garrpaccio, and Al. It’s a tiny restaurant that doesn’t seat more than 20 people at 2 u-shaped bars. And yet, I managed to see three people I know. We weren’t even at the Berkeley location! This was Mountain View! I guess I shouldn’t be so surprised, but I am, anyhow.
The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. At first the movie seemed to be a knockoff of The Time Traveler’s Wife. I didn’t know it was based on an F. Scott Fitzgerald short story. I also wasn’t really into seeing it because of my semi Brad Pitt boycott. I like Cate Blanchett though, so that balanced it out. That, and everyone else wanted to see it. I also really liked that they used two actors that are actually close in age. Overall, it was better than I expected. Slumdog Millionaire is still my favorite movie so far this season.

Review: 99 Chicken and Retrospecticus – KFC
Other people spend New Year’s partying…or recovering from partying. I, on the other hand, am clearing a back log of posts.
So! Korean fried chicken – from here on out known as KFC.
The first time I had KFC was in New York. I had seen an article in the NYT about the craze and so when I planned spring break in NYC in 2007, I was determined to go. It was another first too because I had been a fan of Robyn, otherwise known in the internet world as “The Girl Who Ate Everything” for several months and had gotten up the courage to email her and ask her to go fooding with me. Robyn, Lillie, & I went to Bon Chon Chicken in Manhattan and I liked the chicken a lot – just not the pulsating club music from the giant speaker next to my head.
The next time I had it was quite some time later at OB Chicken Town on Telegraph at the Berkeley-Oakland border. I really liked the garlic honey marinated KFC there, and took many people there to try KFC for the first time. Even though it’s practically a shack, I still really like the food there. The fact that they have yogurt soju is a bonus!

I was really excited when Garrpaccio organized a dinner at 99 Chicken last week. We got the last empty table in the restaurant which was great considering the crowds that began queuing up soon after. We enjoyed two orders of the regular fried chicken, an order of Love Wings, as much for the name as anything else *cough Wenza Bronica cough*, some regular wings, Hot & Spicy chicken, and the Sauce chicken. The salad is free, and the walls are papered with photos of people enjoying their KFC. It’s definitely a fun place for a group.

The regular fried chicken is really juicy but I felt that the batter wasn’t seasoned enough. I really liked the chicken wings though. The regular chicken wings aren’t battered, just fried, and I preferred the battered ones.

This was definitely spicy, way too spicy for me, and the opinion of the people who do like spicy food is that you’d have to like Tabasco to like the sauce on the Hot & Spicy chicken. I managed to finish one piece but I was tearing, needed several napkins to blow my nose, and had to alternate bites with regular chicken to cool my mouth. I don’t know why I didn’t just stop eating it, but I guess I was determined. (Or stupid.) The “Love Wings” that showed up later were much the same, so I didn’t try them. Last but not least the Sauce chicken. I was hoping it would be like the garlic & honey marinated chicken I love at OB Chicken town but these chicken pieces were smothered in a tangy red sauce (not sweet & sour, no idea what it was) and had chopped peanuts sprinkled on top. I guess that helps differentiate from the hot chicken, that had sesame seeds on it. The six plates of chicken were a bit much for the seven of us. Five would probably have been more than enough, but it was fun to try all the flavors.

Dark Angel, Hamster, & Frackaccino

Zombie Hunter, me, Wenza Bronica, and Garrpaccio
Once again I feel the need to mention that I usually ask people to choose their own pseudonyms…which is why they run the gamut from Madeline to Zombie Hunter.
Overall Impressions?
Food 3.5 Korean fried chicken! That means thin crispy batter – not heavy crusty breading. I thought that many of the flavors were one note though.
Ambiance 4 It’s cute. Lots of orange. It was fun to look at the pictures, and if you’re a local, it’s very likely you’ll recognize someone on the board.
Why I’d go back? KFC! Also, unlike my favorite KFC joint in Berkeley, this one is situated in between where my local friends live so it’s a lot easier to meet at.
Review: Bill’s Cafe
Lillie was home for winter break and I definitely wanted to see her before she headed back to NYC. Unfortunately our schedules were clashing! We finally set a time to meet up for brunch on Saturday and I searched Yelp for a restaurant that would fall between our locations. Bill’s Cafe has two locations in San Jose. We met at the one on Bascom. I got there a little late (such is my life) but luckily when I got there Lillie had already gotten a table and was reading the extensive menu.
They had multiple versions of French toast available, but when I saw the bread pudding French toast I was hooked. Bread pudding is one of my favorite things, so I couldn’t wait to see what the French toast version was like.
This was a slice of bread pudding allegedly dipped in egg batter and fried, then served with a fried banana on top and their special bread pudding sauce.

I imagined it would have a egg batter crustiness but there was no apparent egginess, and it was just warmed bread pudding. It even seemed a little soggy, probably due to the copious amount of “sauce” over it, which I think was just melted butter and sugar. It tasted pretty good, but it wasn’t what I imagined. I also had a poached egg and some ham. Lillie thought it was okay, but like me, prefers a different texture of bread pudding.
Lillie ordered the Petaluma scramble with chicken apple sausage, spinach, mushrooms, and cheddar cheese (her request instead of Swiss). I liked the taste I nabbed from her plate a lot, and she seemed happy too.
It was great to see Lillie. Even though we chat on gmail a lot, there’s nothing to beat actually getting to see her!
Overall Impressions?
Food 4 Everything was fresh, well cooked, and quite tasty.
Ambiance 4 It’s a bustling spot with long lines but an open airy dining room and comfortable tables & chairs.
Why I’d go back? The menu has lots of things I’d like to try – one of their many eggs benedict variations, perhaps, and I love brunch.
NYE! Review: Tartine Bakery & Pizzeria Delfina
The last day of the year started off with a bang as I ran around frantically after I overslept to meet Lupe & CNQ. I picked Lupe up…only 20 minutes late. I made her stop at the post office with me and then we headed off for San Francisco to the Mission District and Tartine Bakery!
We tried so many yummy things (both before lunch and later that afternoon with Heido):
croissant – excellent, A+!
lemon curd tart – a little too liquidy with a great crust, B+
gougere – huge and good even cold
oatmeal chocolate chip cookie – this was very thin & crisp, not to my taste since I prefer chewy cookies but we all marveled at the hugeness of it. This was as big as my face. And I have a BIG HEAD. B+
shortbread – so so so buttery, B
lemon meringue cake – multitude of thin layers enrobed with lemon curd and entirely covered with whirls of meringue that were torched lightly to a gorgeous golden brown – A
After some of the sweet things, we turned the corner and had lunch at Pizzeria Delfina. We got three seats at the counter with just a short wait and ate some very delicious pizza.
Amatriciana – guanciale, caramelized onions, red peppers, garlic, & tomatoes
Prosciutto – prosciutto, bufalo mozzarella, & lightly dressed fresh arugula
We had to walk off the food so we wandered down to Dolores Park.

Lupe & CNQ decided they had to ride on the swings…I decided I had to take pictures.

Lupe & I made a stop with some of the Tartine deliciousness to see Heido and baby Jimbo again. I looooooove him. He is such a sweet baby. I can’t believe she has a baby! He is getting chubbier and his eyelashes are long and dark when he’s sleeping and he snuggles up to your neck when you hold him and I am just going on and on and on about how wonderful he is…pictures on other memory card, darn it!
Anyway! I took Lupe home so she could finish packing. She left for Portland at 5am this morning. After a quick dinner with my parents I went over to Garrpaccio & Frackaccino’s place for a very low key NYE with our other high school friends. We played games and watched a little HIMYM…and completely missed the countdown. Go us!
Overall Impressions:
Tartine
food: 4 I feel like this bakery is a little pricey, but there’s always a line out the door. Everything we tried was flaky, buttery, and quite delicious. The open faced croque monsieur and pressed sandwiches smelled and looked amazing. They also have a coffee bar.
ambiance: 4 There are a few tables inside the bakery. The space is saved from stuffiness by high ceilings and huge windows. There are also several outside tables, that enhance a faux Parisian environment.
why I’d go back: I didn’t try any of the amazing looking/smelling sandwiches! Also, I hear the morning buns are fabulous.
Pizzeria Delfina:
food: 4 The pizzas are always perfectly scorched with a thin chewy crust that isn’t too cracker thin. The toppings are great and I always like trying one of the changing special pies.
ambiance: 3+ It’s a small space. That’s one thing I hate about most restaurants in the city – very small and noisy.
why I’d go back: It’s yummy pizza and it’s located on a block where in one direction you can go to the Bi-Rite Creamery for ice cream, and in the other you get delicious baked yumminess. Wonderful combination.
