OMG. This cake. THIS CAKE. DELICIOUS.

I bought a slice of chocolate caramel cake from this bakery because…it looked good. That’s the only reason. Now, don’t get me wrong, Pinisi still lives on as my absolutely favorite cake in the world, but this is running a close second right now.

Chocolate Caramel Cake

Chocolate Caramel Cake

The chocolate flavor came out in the moist fluffy cake layers but it wasn’t too sweet, even in combination with the deliciously light and creamy caramel layers. The frosting was excellent too, but the caramel filling was great. I think they whipped it with cream to make it so light and somehow, it didn’t overwhelm the cake.

The photo is sort of ugly because I didn’t eat it right away. When I took it out of the fridge the next day I think my reaction was something like “MMM NOM NOM NOM” and then I remembered, hey I blog about stuff now, and people want to see pictures! SO. Ugly half-eaten cake picture.

DEFINITELY WILL RETURN.

Mount Rainier

Christine's Falls

Christine's Falls

I hate to use the most overused word of the last few years, but the situation calls for it. Mt. Rainier is AMAZING. Fisher, our resident outdoorsman, and I went to go scout it out on Sunday. What we found was something we had never seen before. While Mt. Rainier is covered in glaciers, the base of the mountain is covered in green, green, green, and flowers, flowers, flowers. It was so perfect I felt like I was walking through a manicured garden: little rolling green hills and valleys, small pines, perfectly placed rocks, colorful flowers, and even a trickling creek. Here and there, were patches of snow, and in the near distance loomed the glacier covered Rainier. With the binocs that Fisher brought, you could even see the blueness in the crags. And up on top we could see a bunch of ice climbers.

On the way to Paradise trail head, we passed two awesome waterfalls. The first was Christine’s falls, and the second Narada falls. And along our hike of Deadhorse Creek Trail, we was two fat marmots, and a deer. We then took Glacier Vista and it started raining. We reached as far a little snow field, took the obligatory photos, and then turned around on Skyline trail. On the way back home, just outside the park, I bought a piece of homemade blackberry pie, which I shared with Jeanne at home. It wasn’t awesome, but hey, it had the novelty of being bought from a mom ‘n’ pop restaurant/souvenier store at Mt. Rainier, and probably better than a T-shirt with a bear on it that says “Mt. Rainier.”

Anyway if you’re ever in the area, you’ve GOT to make a point to hike the Mt. And the hike is really tame, so it’s good for young and old. In the future, we plan to check out Olympic national park, which is known for being super lush and green, and today in clinic I was told twice by patients that Mt. St. Helen is a must see. Stay tuned…

Shopping post/Poll

I have been gazing at handbags. I love grey and it seems to be the new fall “IT” color. I decided I would treat myself to one classic grey leather bag because who knows the next time there will be grey bags available?

Here are my current options under consideration:

1. Nordstrom Soft Pleated Tote in grey

2. Hobo International Studio Soft Satchel in anthracite

3. Rebecca Minkoff Morning After Bag Mini in cloud grey

4. Francesco Biasia Secret Love K in grey

5. J. Crew Jamie bag in dark cloud

Opinions, please?

Review: Old Milwaukee Cafe

Madeline found this place on Yelp. I have mixed feelings about Yelp because I feel like the reviews can be misleading. I have to say, this place was a winner. We’ll definitely be back.

French Toast

French Toast

My french toast was perfect. It wasn’t too sweet even with the powdered sugar and they warmed the syrup which was a nice touch.

Maple bacon

Maple bacon

I also had a side of thick-cut maple bacon. Bacon lovers of the world…come and eat this bacon! It was cooked perfectly for my taste, not too crispy, and the maple flavor was very subtle.

Huckleberry pancake

Huckleberry pancake

Em’s huckleberry pancake was huge! Hence, the photo was taken to show that it’s bigger than her face. We split everything so I got to try some and it was really good. Huckleberries seem to be a cross between blackberries and blueberries. Really really really good.

Ham & Home fries

Ham & Home fries

She also had a side of ham and we split the home fries. I don’t like home fries with bell peppers & onions so these were almost perfect to me. Simple – just diced red potatoes cooked til crispy. I think a litttttle more browning would have been even better, but still, delicious.

I love brunch. =)

Fremont!

Posted in Weekend Exploring tagged at 6:26 am by jeannesays

Let me preface this by saying that I know the post is sort of ugly. I’m re-learning html and I hate it. This is as good as it’s going to get tonight.

No, not Fremont, CA. I’m talking about the Fremont neighborhood of Seattle.

I slept in today, and it was glorious. I woke up a few times but was able to roll over and snuggle into my pillows for a few more hours. I finally got up at eleven.

Today, Em, Campbell, and I went to visit the other Fremont. Mabel, Campbell’s girlfriend, used to live there, so he was the de facto tour guide today

Lenin!

We started off our tour with a visit to Lenin’s statue. I’m not sure why he’s there but he’s huge.

I didn’t get up close to the rocket but snapped a few shots as we wandered through the neighborhood.

Flying Apron Bakery

Flying Apron Bakery

I saw a bakery sign and took off up the block to visit it. As soon as I stepped in I knew it was a mistake. They are a vegan bakery that uses alternative sweeteners. I…couldn’t do it. Not even for the sake of experimentation. Luckily across the street there was another bakery, Simply Desserts.

I bought a chocolate chip cookie, a chocolate swirl brownie (really just a chocolate chip cookie bar), and a slice of chocolate caramel cake. The cookies were really good and I haven’t tried the cake yet. I think the cookies are better than mine. Flat, nice chocolate to cookie ratio, and buttery, chewy texture. Of course, I’d have to try them again to make sure. =)

Fremont Troll

Fremont Troll

The Fremont Troll lives under the Aurora Bridge. He’s a lot bigger than I expected! There were people climbing all over him. I think I thought it would be one of those weird plastic trolls that were popular in the 90’s.

This is a piece of public art near the Fremont Bridge. Apparently people dress the statues. We didn’t bring any clothes but maybe once I weed out my closet…

The bridge has a small neon light fixture of Rapunzel. There was no explanation board there so I have to conclude that someone really likes fairy tales there.

Blue C Sushi

Blue C Sushi

We had dinner at a kaiten sushi place (conveyor belt) in Fremont, Blue C Sushi. I’ve never actually eaten off a conveyor belt before, and I thought this was pretty good. It probably helped that we were there during the dinner rush so they were bringing out fresh items pretty often. When we walked outside, I saw my new mantra on a sign: Skip Work, Eat Sushi. MMM!

Me at Maggie Moon's

Me at Maggie Moon

We tried to find a good vantage point for a view of the sunset, but we were about 90 minutes early so we ended up in Wallingford for some dessert. We went to Maggie Moon’s for ice cream. This place is almost identical to Bi-rite in terms of appearance. The menu is less innovative and they have fewer sundaes than Bi-rite. Having tried the salted caramel at both, Bi-rite’s ice cream is much better. Campbell said his maple walnut had ice crystals in it too. Tsk tsk. I didn’t like my cherry chunk much either, and didn’t finish. (I KNOW I ALWAYS FINISH SWEETS.) There wasn’t enough cherry flavor and wayyyy too many little grainy bits of chocolate to chew.

All in all, it was a fun afternoon.

Another beginning…

Posted in Uncategorized tagged at 12:00 am by jeannesays

This is probably the sixth or seventh blog I’ve started. I’ve never stayed with one for more than a few months. We’ll see how long this lasts, but really my goal is just to chronicle my experience living out of California for the next few months.

The header photo is the view I have when I step out my front door. I’m very lucky.

Left side of the duplex

Left side of the duplex

I am living in a duplex with two other girls. There may be more roommates moving in later in the semester, but the housing administrator was pretty vague about their arrival. I’m in the master bedroom with my friend Madeline (an alias!) aka Em and though the house has room for six it’s just us and a girl from another school named Sarah. These names may or may not be real. If you actually know me, email me if you can’t figure out who’s who.
The house is a lot nicer than I expected given that it’s provided housing that we don’t have to pay for. Since it’s free, I really had zero expectations. It’s got a roomy living room and dining room that I expect to enjoy studying in, a decent kitchen, and biggest plus of all, a washer and dryer in the unit. I like our room too, especially now that we’ve settled in, and we have the lake view. The only downside is that there’s only one bathroom.
I guess if this is really going to chronicle my Tacoma adventure, I should rewind and start from the beginning…
Last Friday I spent the evening frantically cleaning and packing. I took a final load of things to my storage unit after I realized my car wasn’t big enough for everything I had in Emeryville over the summer and my fall/winter coats/sweaters/etc. As I’d find out later…I lack spatial planning skills. Sherry and CNQ were super nice and changed our dinner plans to help me move stuff instead. We stopped at Nation’s for a quick bite and then went back so I could continue my packing rampage. Jensa & her bf stopped by and we enjoyed the yummy chocolate bundt Wyu made (from scratch!) before saying some sad goodbyes.
I got up early Saturday morning to clean and pack the last few things in the bathroom. I started loading things in my car at 7:00 am. What I soon realized was that I should have started much, much earlier. Campbell and Mabel ended up masterminding the packing tetris game while I ran loads out to the car. By the time we finished, I had about 2 inches of clear rear window and no rear visibility. My front passenger seat was so full that Evie would beep irritatingly and flash the “passenger seatbelt” sign every time I turned the car on. We finally got on the road at 8:30. The drive was ridiculously long. I knew it would be, and yet, my brain liquefied more than I thought possible. We stopped for lunch in Yreka (fun fact, there’s a Eureka AND a Yreka) and we were only about 295 miles away. 480 to go. URGH.
It was unbelievably hot all the way through Oregon, about 101 all 300 miles up. I kept myself awake by listening to the radio and for one memorable couple hundred mile stretch, by singing with my ipod to every Weezer song ever recorded. I also had several conversations with myself or with my stuffed raccoon. By the time we pulled over for a final snack in Chehalis, I was completely worn out. Sidenote: Jack in the Box Macaroni & Cheese bites are really good. They taste like Kraft macaroni & cheese in a batter crust. I was so happy I had booked a hotel in Tacoma because it saved me driving another 40 miles to Campbell’s parents’ house, even though he had graciously offered to let us stay there. I checked into my room, briefly considered lugging some things upstairs, then only carried up my overnight bag. I was so tired that I figured if someone wanted whatever I had there…they were welcome to it.
I watched a little bit of the Olympics and then fell asleep. I wanted to sleep in but unfortunately left the blinds open so woke up with a face full of sunshine. I got up and drove around to explore Tacoma a little. I managed to take care of a few important tasks such as finding the closest Trader Joe’s and the nearest mall. This was all very exhausting so I needed a nap.
Madeline and her dad made the trip up on Sunday and arrived after I woke up. We went to Neo’s Wood Fired Pizza for dinner, mostly because it was across the street from our hotel. It was a little strange to be in an almost empty restaurant, but our food was fine.
Monday dawned drizzly and grey (my first taste of Pacific Northwest weather!) and Em drove us to work for orientation. We spent the morning trekking from office to office, signing paperwork and taking photos. We picked up our house keys and I was able to start unloading a few things before we needed to go fill out MORE paperwork. It rained in little spurts so finally I set a goal of merely getting everything into the house during the brief dry spell in the afternoon. Once that was completed I could lug stuff upstairs at my leisure.
Em was a model of organization this week and was completely unpacked and settled by Wednesday. I…just finished yesterday, and really, that was because I felt guilty for taking up so much space in our room.
Monday night we decided to celebrate our first night all together in Tacoma by having dinner at the Harmon Brewery. The beer, as rated by Campbell and Fisher, was only ok. The food was pretty good though, and the fact that we happened to be there for happy hour night was a bonus.
Tuesday we did a very dull computer training module, had lunch in the cafeteria (I’ll post on that in the future), and ran errands. I managed to spend a lot of money…where else but at Target.
Wednesday we all went in to observe, then were informed we were to start work that afternoon…two days before the previous timeline. I know we had an easy first week, especially relative to lots of my classmates…but once you’re expecting some time off, I think I would feel indignant to find out something has changed re: the schedule.
On Thursday Em announced that it was free admission day at the Tacoma Museum of Glass so we headed there after work. It was, in a word, beautiful. It isn’t large, so the hour we had before it closed felt like plenty of time to go through the exhibits. Surprisingly, Dale Chihuly’s work is mostly evident in the bridge and in City Hall across the river, and I don’t recall any pieces actually on display in the museum. Most of the pieces there right now are by Lino Tagliapietra. His designs floored me. If only I were rich and could afford one of his pieces…

Friday night we went and saw Tropic Thunder, which I highly recommend. It was very very funny, and I was surprised by some of the actors’ performances. Best movie I’ve seen in a while…
